In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

bookmark 1. By the night as it covers.

1. وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ

bookmark 2. And the day as it reveals.

2. وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ

bookmark 3. And He who created the male and the female.

3. وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ

bookmark 4. Your endeavors are indeed diverse.

4. إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ

bookmark 5. As for him who gives and is righteous.

5. فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ

bookmark 6. And confirms goodness.

6. وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ

bookmark 7. We will ease his way towards ease.

7. فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ

bookmark 8. But as for him who is stingy and complacent.

8. وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ

bookmark 9. And denies goodness.

9. وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ

bookmark 10. We will ease his way towards difficulty.

10. فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ

bookmark 11. And his money will not avail him when he plummets.

11. وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ

bookmark 12. It is upon Us to guide.

12. إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ

bookmark 13. And to Us belong the Last and the First.

13. وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْءَاخِرَةَ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ

bookmark 14. I have warned you of a Fierce Blaze.

14. فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًۭا تَلَظَّىٰ

bookmark 15. None will burn in it except the very wicked.

15. لَا يَصْلَىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلْأَشْقَى

bookmark 16. He who denies and turns away.

16. ٱلَّذِى كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

bookmark 17. But the devout will avoid it.

17. وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَتْقَى

bookmark 18. He who gives his money to become pure.

18. ٱلَّذِى يُؤْتِى مَالَهُۥ يَتَزَكَّىٰ

bookmark 19. Seeking no favor in return.

19. وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍۢ تُجْزَىٰٓ

bookmark 20. Only seeking the acceptance of his Lord, the Most High.

20. إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

bookmark 21. And he will be satisfied.

21. وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ

Context of Revelation

The surah Al-Layl (“The Night”) is a Meccan surah composed of 21 verses. Its name comes from the opening verse, where God swears by the night — a symbol of contrast between light and darkness, good and evil, faith and disbelief.

According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, it was revealed during the Meccan period when the Quraysh rejected the Prophet’s ﷺ message. The surah emphasizes human freedom of choice and the consequences of one’s actions. It is traditionally linked to Abu ad-Dahdah, a believer who gave away his orchard purely to seek God’s pleasure.

Main Teachings and Key Insights

Al-Layl explores the diversity of human behavior and the moral outcomes of choices. It shows that true success lies in generosity, faith, and piety. Its main teachings include:

  • Divine oaths on cosmic cycles (night, day, the creation of male and female), symbolizing universal balance and duality. (verses 1–4)
  • God has set before man two clear paths: one of righteousness and one of corruption. (verses 5–10)
  • Those who give and believe will find their way made easy, while those who withhold and deny will face hardship. (verses 7–11)
  • Reminder of divine justice: every soul will be repaid according to its deeds and intentions. (verses 12–16)
  • Promise of bliss for those who act sincerely for God’s sake alone. (verses 17–21)

The surah highlights personal responsibility and the link between intention, effort, and destiny, teaching that true wealth lies in the purity of the heart, not in possessions.

Structure and Main Themes

  • Oaths by night and day (verses 1–4): signs of divine order and complementarity.
  • Two paths of life (verses 5–10): generosity versus greed.
  • Divine recompense (verses 11–16): ease for the righteous, difficulty for the defiant.
  • Example of sincere faith (verses 17–21): one who gives purely for God’s pleasure, seeking nothing in return.

Key Verses

The central verses of the surah are verses 5–7:

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ * وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ * فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ

As for he who gives, is mindful of God, and believes in the best reward — We will ease his way toward ease.
