In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

bookmark 1. O you Enrobed one.

1. يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ

bookmark 2. Arise and warn.

2. قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ

bookmark 3. And magnify your Lord.

3. وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ

bookmark 4. And purify your clothes.

4. وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ

bookmark 5. And abandon abominations.

5. وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ

bookmark 6. And show no favor seeking gain.

6. وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ

bookmark 7. And be constant for your Lord.

7. وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ

bookmark 8. When the Trumpet is blown.

8. فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ

bookmark 9. That Day will be a difficult day.

9. فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ

bookmark 10. For the disbelievers—not easy.

10. عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍۢ

bookmark 11. Leave Me to him whom I created alone.

11. ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًۭا

bookmark 12. And gave him vast wealth.

12. وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًۭا مَّمْدُودًۭا

bookmark 13. And children as witnesses.

13. وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًۭا

bookmark 14. And smoothed things for him.

14. وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًۭا

bookmark 15. Then he wants Me to add yet more!

15. ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ

bookmark 16. By no means! He was stubborn towards Our revelations.

16. كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَايَٰتِنَا عَنِيدًۭا

bookmark 17. I will exhaust him increasingly.

17. سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا

bookmark 18. He thought and analyzed.

18. إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ

bookmark 19. May he perish, how he analyzed.

19. فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ

bookmark 20. Again: may he perish, how he analyzed.

20. ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ

bookmark 21. Then he looked.

21. ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

bookmark 22. Then he frowned and whined.

22. ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ

bookmark 23. Then he turned back and was proud.

23. ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ

bookmark 24. And said, “This is nothing but magic from the past.

24. فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ يُؤْثَرُ

bookmark 25. This is nothing but the word of a mortal.”

25. إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ

bookmark 26. I will roast him in Saqar.

26. سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ

bookmark 27. But what will explain to you what Saqar is?

27. وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ

bookmark 28. It neither leaves, nor spares.

28. لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ

bookmark 29. It scorches the flesh.

29. لَوَّاحَةٌۭ لِّلْبَشَرِ

bookmark 30. Over it are Nineteen.

30. عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ

bookmark 31. We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and caused their number to be a stumbling block for those who disbelieve; so that those given the Scripture may attain certainty; and those who believe may increase in faith; and those given the Scripture and the believers may not doubt; and those in whose hearts is sickness and the unbelievers may say, “What did God intend by this parable?” Thus God leads astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. None knows the soldiers of your Lord except He. This is nothing but a reminder for the mortals.

31. وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةًۭ ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَٰنًۭا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًۭا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ

bookmark 32. Nay! By the moon.

32. كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ

bookmark 33. And the night as it retreats.

33. وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ

bookmark 34. And the morning as it lights up.

34. وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ

bookmark 35. It is one of the greatest.

35. إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ

bookmark 36. A warning to the mortals.

36. نَذِيرًۭا لِّلْبَشَرِ

bookmark 37. To whomever among you wishes to advance, or regress.

37. لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ

bookmark 38. Every soul is hostage to what it has earned.

38. كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ

bookmark 39. Except for those on the Right.

39. إِلَّآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ

bookmark 40. In Gardens, inquiring.

40. فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

bookmark 41. About the guilty.

41. عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

bookmark 42. “What drove you into Saqar?”

42. مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ

bookmark 43. They will say, “We were not of those who prayed.

43. قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ

bookmark 44. Nor did we feed the destitute.

44. وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ

bookmark 45. And we used to indulge with those who indulge.

45. وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ

bookmark 46. And we used to deny the Day of Judgment.

46. وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

bookmark 47. Until the Inevitable came upon us.”

47. حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ

bookmark 48. But the intercession of intercessors will not help them.

48. فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ

bookmark 49. Why are they turning away from the Reminder?

49. فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ

bookmark 50. As though they were panicked donkeys.

50. كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌۭ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭ

bookmark 51. Fleeing from a lion?

51. فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ

bookmark 52. Yet every one of them desires to be given scrolls unrolled.

52. بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًۭا مُّنَشَّرَةًۭ

bookmark 53. No indeed! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

53. كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ

bookmark 54. Nevertheless, it is a reminder.

54. كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌۭ

bookmark 55. So whoever wills, shall remember it.

55. فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

bookmark 56. But they will not remember, unless God wills. He is the Source of Righteousness, and the Source of Forgiveness.

56. وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ

Context of Revelation

Surah Al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One) is a Meccan surah consisting of 56 verses. It is among the earliest revelations, revealed shortly after Surah Al-‘Alaq and Al-Muzzammil. The word Al-Muddaththir means “the one wrapped in his cloak,” referring to the Prophet ﷺ when he was enveloped in a garment, moved by the weight of the first revelations.

According to authentic narrations in Sahih Al-Bukhari (4953) and Muslim (160), this surah marks the beginning of the Prophet’s public mission. God calls upon him to rise, warn humanity, purify himself, and proclaim the divine message with courage. ([sahih al-bukhari, 4953])

Main Teachings and Key Insights

Surah Al-Muddaththir lays the foundations of the prophetic mission: calling, purification, and perseverance. Its major lessons include:

  • The divine command to the Prophet ﷺ to rise and warn. (vv. 1–2)
  • The call to moral and spiritual purity: cleansing oneself and staying away from sin. (vv. 4–5)
  • The order to be patient and detached from worldly reward: seeking no compensation for conveying the message. (vv. 6–7)
  • The warning to the deniers and the story of Al-Walīd ibn Al-Mughīrah, who accused the Qur’an of being sorcery. (vv. 11–26)
  • The vivid description of Hell (Saqar) and the dialogue between its inhabitants. (vv. 27–48)

The surah emphasizes that Islam’s message is rooted in sincerity, purification, and inner struggle. It reveals the weight of prophetic responsibility and the believer’s duty toward truth and moral vigilance.

Structure and Main Themes

  • Initial Call (vv. 1–7): God commands the Prophet ﷺ to rise, purify his mission, and persevere in patience.
  • Condemnation of the Deniers (vv. 8–26): the arrogant reaction of the disbelievers to revelation and their moral blindness.
  • Punishment in Hell (vv. 27–48): depiction of the torment awaiting the deniers and their testimony in the Hereafter.

Key Verse

قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
