Context of Revelation

Surah At-Tur (The Mount) is a Meccan surah composed of 49 verses. Its name comes from the opening verse, which swears “by the Mount” (At-Tur), referring to Mount Sinai where God spoke to Moses. The surah was revealed during the middle Meccan period, addressing a defiant community that denied resurrection and mocked the Prophet ﷺ. It reaffirms the truth of the Qur’an and warns of the consequences of rejecting divine revelation.

Main Teachings and Key Insights

Surah At-Tur emphasizes the certainty of the Day of Judgment, the severity of divine punishment for the unjust, and the eternal joy of the believers. It opens with solemn oaths underscoring the weight of God’s promise and message. Key teachings include:

  • The divine oaths affirming the reality of Judgment. (vv. 1–8)

Key Verse

The pivotal verse is verse 48:

وَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا ۖ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ

So be patient with your Lord’s command, for you are under Our watchful care. And glorify your Lord with praise when you rise.

Why this verse is key:
