In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

bookmark 1. When the sky is ruptured.

1. إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْ

bookmark 2. And hearkens to its Lord, as it must.

2. وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ

bookmark 3. And when the earth is leveled out.

3. وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ

bookmark 4. And casts out what is in it, and becomes empty.

4. وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ

bookmark 5. And hearkens to its Lord, as it must.

5. وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ

bookmark 6. O man! You are laboring towards your Lord, and you will meet Him.

6. يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًۭا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ

bookmark 7. As for him who is given his book in his right hand.

7. فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ

bookmark 8. He will have an easy settlement.

8. فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًۭا يَسِيرًۭا

bookmark 9. And will return to his family delighted.

9. وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًۭا

bookmark 10. But as for him who is given his book behind his back.

10. وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهْرِهِۦ

bookmark 11. He will call for death.

11. فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًۭا

bookmark 12. And will enter the Blaze.

12. وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا

bookmark 13. He used to be happy among his family.

13. إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِىٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا

bookmark 14. He thought he would never return.

14. إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ

bookmark 15. In fact, his Lord was watching him.

15. بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرًۭا

bookmark 16. I swear by the twilight.

16. فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ

bookmark 17. And by the night, and what it covers.

17. وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ

bookmark 18. And by the moon, as it grows full.

18. وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ

bookmark 19. You will mount stage by stage.

19. لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍۢ

bookmark 20. What is the matter with them that they do not believe?

20. فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

bookmark 21. And when the Quran is read to them, they do not bow down?

21. وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩

bookmark 22. In fact, those who disbelieve are in denial.

22. بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُكَذِّبُونَ

bookmark 23. But God knows what they hide inside.

23. وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ

bookmark 24. So inform them of a painful punishment.

24. فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

bookmark 25. Except those who believe and do good deeds; they will have an undiminished reward.

25. إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۭ

Context of Revelation

The surah Al-Inshiqaq (“The Splitting Apart”) is a Meccan surah consisting of 25 verses. The word Al-Inshiqaq means “to split” or “to tear apart,” referring to the opening verse describing the moment when the sky will split open on the Day of Resurrection.

According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, this surah belongs to the same eschatological group as At-Takwir and Al-Infitar, which portray the cosmic upheavals preceding the Last Judgment. As narrated in a hadith reported by At-Tirmidhi (no. 3334), the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever wishes to see the Day of Resurrection as if before his eyes, let him recite At-Takwir, Al-Infitar, and Al-Inshiqaq.

Main Teachings and Notable Insights

The surah Al-Inshiqaq teaches the reality of the world’s end, personal accountability, and final reckoning before God. It depicts the submission of creation to divine order and distinguishes two types of people: those who receive their record in their right hand and those who receive it behind their back. Key lessons include:

  • Signs of the end times: the sky splits, the earth is leveled, and the dead are resurrected. (verses 1–5)
  • The human condition: man toils and strives until he meets his Lord. (verse 6)
  • The reckoning: the righteous are rewarded with joy, while the disbelievers face distress. (verses 7–15)
  • Proofs of divine power: the alternation of day and night, and signs within creation. (verses 16–20)

This surah emphasizes the absolute submission of the universe to God and reminds humankind that, though endowed with free will, every soul will answer for how it was used.

Key Verse

The central verse of the surah is verse 6:

يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنسَانُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَاقِيهِ

O man! You are laboring toward your Lord with great exertion—and you will meet Him.
