In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

bookmark 1. By those who snatch violently.

1. وَٱلنَّٰزِعَٰتِ غَرْقًۭا

bookmark 2. And those who remove gently.

2. وَٱلنَّٰشِطَٰتِ نَشْطًۭا

bookmark 3. And those who glide smoothly.

3. وَٱلسَّٰبِحَٰتِ سَبْحًۭا

bookmark 4. And those who race swiftly.

4. فَٱلسَّٰبِقَٰتِ سَبْقًۭا

bookmark 5. And those who regulate events.

5. فَٱلْمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمْرًۭا

bookmark 6. On the Day when the Quake quakes.

6. يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ

bookmark 7. And is followed by the Successor.

7. تَتْبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ

bookmark 8. Hearts on that Day will be pounding.

8. قُلُوبٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ وَاجِفَةٌ

bookmark 9. Their sights downcast.

9. أَبْصَٰرُهَا خَٰشِعَةٌۭ

bookmark 10. They say, “Are we to be restored to the original condition?

10. يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِى ٱلْحَافِرَةِ

bookmark 11. When we have become hollow bones?”

11. أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَٰمًۭا نَّخِرَةًۭ

bookmark 12. They say, “This is a losing proposition.”

12. قَالُوا۟ تِلْكَ إِذًۭا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌۭ

bookmark 13. But it will be only a single nudge.

13. فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌۭ وَٰحِدَةٌۭ

bookmark 14. And they will be awake.

14. فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ

bookmark 15. Has the story of Moses reached you?

15. هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ

bookmark 16. When His Lord called out to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa.

16. إِذْ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلْوَادِ ٱلْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى

bookmark 17. “Go to Pharaoh—he has transgressed.”

17. ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ

bookmark 18. And say, “Do you care to be cleansed?

18. فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ

bookmark 19. And I will guide you to your Lord, and you will turn reverent.”

19. وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ

bookmark 20. He showed him the Greatest Miracle.

20. فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلْءَايَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ

bookmark 21. But he denied and defied.

21. فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ

bookmark 22. Then turned his back, and tried.

22. ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ

bookmark 23. And gathered and proclaimed.

23. فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ

bookmark 24. He said, “I am your Lord, the most high.”

24. فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

bookmark 25. So God seized him with an exemplary punishment, in the last and in the first.

25. فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ وَٱلْأُولَىٰٓ

bookmark 26. In this is a lesson for whoever fears.

26. إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةًۭ لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰٓ

bookmark 27. Are you more difficult to create, or the heaven? He constructed it.

27. ءَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ ۚ بَنَىٰهَا

bookmark 28. He raised its masses, and proportioned it.

28. رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا

bookmark 29. And He dimmed its night, and brought out its daylight.

29. وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا

bookmark 30. And the earth after that He spread.

30. وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ

bookmark 31. And from it, He produced its water and its pasture.

31. أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا

bookmark 32. And the mountains, He anchored.

32. وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَرْسَىٰهَا

bookmark 33. A source of enjoyment for you and for your animals.

33. مَتَٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ

bookmark 34. But when the Great Cataclysm arrives.

34. فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ

bookmark 35. A Day when man will remember what he has endeavored.

35. يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ

bookmark 36. And Hell will be displayed to whoever sees.

36. وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ

bookmark 37. As for him who was defiant.

37. فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ

bookmark 38. And preferred the life of this world.

38. وَءَاثَرَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا

bookmark 39. Then Hell is the shelter.

39. فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ

bookmark 40. But as for him who feared the Standing of his Lord, and restrained the self from desires.

40. وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفْسَ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ

bookmark 41. Then Paradise is the shelter.

41. فَإِنَّ ٱلْجَنَّةَ هِىَ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰ

bookmark 42. They ask you about the Hour, “When will it take place?”

42. يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَىٰهَا

bookmark 43. You have no knowledge of it.

43. فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكْرَىٰهَآ

bookmark 44. To your Lord is its finality.

44. إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ

bookmark 45. You are just a warner for whoever dreads it.

45. إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰهَا

bookmark 46. On the Day when they witness it—as though they only stayed an evening, or its morning.

46. كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوٓا۟ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَىٰهَا

Context of Revelation

Surah An-Nāzi‘āt (Those Who Tear Out) is a Meccan surah consisting of 46 verses. It was revealed in Mecca during a time when the Quraysh fiercely denied the Day of Judgment and the resurrection of the dead. The term An-Nāzi‘āt refers to the angels of death—those who “pluck out the souls”—a powerful image symbolizing the transition from life to the hereafter.

According to Ibn Kathīr and Al-Qurtubī, this surah reaffirms God’s absolute authority and refutes the doubts of the disbelievers regarding resurrection. It intertwines oaths by the angels and cosmic phenomena with prophetic narratives, particularly that of Moses (Mūsā), to highlight the inevitability of divine justice.

Main Teachings and Key Insights

Surah An-Nāzi‘āt emphasizes the reality of the Last Day, the submission of all beings to God’s will, and the inevitable judgment of every soul. Its main lessons include:

  • The angels of death fulfill God’s command, taking the souls of the faithful gently and the souls of the wicked forcefully. (vv. 1–5)
  • The resurrection is certain: a single blast of the trumpet will revive all souls. (vv. 6–14)
  • The story of Moses and Pharaoh illustrates the downfall of arrogance and the consequence of rejecting truth. (vv. 15–26)
  • The creation of the heavens and the earth stands as proof of God’s supreme power and wisdom. (vv. 27–33)
  • The final judgment will separate those who revere God from those who follow their desires. (vv. 34–41)

The surah invites reflection on death, creation, and divine justice. Its energetic rhythm and vivid tone create an atmosphere of urgency and awakening.

Structure and Main Themes

  • Oaths by the angels (vv. 1–5): symbols of divine authority and the reality of death.
  • Proclamation of the Resurrection (vv. 6–14): cosmic upheaval and return of all souls to God.

Key Verse

The central verses of the surah are verses 40–41:

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ * فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ

“But as for those who feared standing before their Lord and restrained themselves from (evil) desires — indeed, Paradise will be their abode.”

Why this verse is key:

  • It captures the moral essence of the Qur’an: reverence for God and self-restraint lead to salvation.
