Context of Revelation

The surah Al-Ḥijr (The Valley of Stone) is a Meccan surah, revealed during the middle period of the Prophet’s mission in Mecca. Its name refers to the rocky valley of Al-Ḥijr, located between the Hijaz and the Levant, where the people of Thamûd lived — a people known for rejecting the message of the Prophet Ṣâliḥ.

The context of revelation corresponds to a time of intense opposition from the Quraysh. This surah was thus revealed to provide comfort and firmness to the Prophet, while reminding of the fate of those who denied earlier messengers.

Teachings and Key Insights

Al-Ḥijr primarily addresses the power of the Divine Word, the creation of humankind, and the inevitable decree of God. It emphasizes the preservation of the Qur’an: Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian. (verse 9)

The surah recounts the creation of Adam, the rebellion of Iblîs (Satan), and God’s promise to protect His revelation until the end of time. It strengthens the believers’ faith in the continuity, reliability, and Divine protection of the Islamic message.

In parallel, the stories of past peoples — notably those of Thamûd and the people of Lot — serve as warnings against arrogance, disobedience, and the rejection of guidance.

Structure and Main Themes

  • Introduction (verses 1–15): affirmation of the truth of the Qur’an and warning to the mockers.
  • Creation and temptation (verses 26–44): the creation of Adam, the refusal of Iblîs, and the decree of punishment for the misguided.
  • Prophetic narratives (verses 45–84): mention of Lot, the inhabitants of Al-Ḥijr, and the fate of ancient peoples.
  • Conclusion (verses 85–99): comfort to the Prophet, reminder of forgiveness, and invitation to patience and praise.

The overall tone of the surah is one of spiritual firmness: God preserves His revelation, guides the believers, and punishes the unjust. It is both consoling for the Prophet and warning for the deniers.

Key Verse

The central verse of the surah is verse 9: إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ (“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian.”)

This verse expresses one of the fundamental principles of Islamic theology: the Divine preservation of the Qur’an. Unlike previous revelations, which were altered or forgotten, the Qur’an is divinely protected from any form of corruption.

Another significant passage is verse 87: And We have certainly given you the seven oft-repeated [verses] and the great Qur’an. This verse refers to Surah Al-Fātiḥah and its central status in prayer and faith.

In essence, Al-Ḥijr emphasizes the power of the Divine message, the unchanging truth of the Qur’an, and the importance of patience and praise on the path of faith.
